Las Lomitas Elementary School District

Mary Ann Somerville, former superintendent of Las Lomitas Elementary School District, is also a former Stanford basketball player. Her basketball and education pasts converge at Maples Pavilion on Friday, Jan. 26, as Stanford women’s basketball celebrates Graduate School of Education Night.

Mary Ann will be throwing T-shirts into the crowd and will be recognized as one of the Graduate School of Education’s five alumnae hoops players as part of the school’s centennial celebrations.

Mary Ann admits the game has changed a lot since she played in the pre-Title IX 1960s: “We didn’t have uniforms. We had pinnies – little aprons with our numbers on them. There was no training time. … I wouldn’t call what I feel jealousy, exactly. It’s more like, ‘We could have been contenders, if we’d had the resources.’

“I have a very kinesthetic reaction at the games. As I watch, I can feel myself doing what Kiana Williams and some of the other point guards have done.”

Mary Ann watches a lot: She’s been a season-ticket holder all these years. The game vs. Arizona State tips off at 7pm. Friday, Jan. 26. Tickets are $10 and up with code GSEWBB.
