Memories of growing up in Lindenwood in the ’50s & ’60s

by Chris Abramson on April 17, 2024

Growing up in Lindenwood was magical. Somewhat lost as a young boy in a new family, the streets behind those gates and brick wall became my refuge.

I lived on Hawthorne Drive near James Avenue from 1954 to 1969. Our home was an Eichler design and graced the magazine cover of House Beautiful during the mid-50s. In fact, Mr. Eichler lived around the corner in his own ‘Eichler’ on Irving Avenue which is still standing today.

During that entire time, I had no idea about ‘Linden Towers’, the Flood Estate mansion built in 1878, and its rich history among estates in Atherton. Sure, I knew there were mansion ruins behind homes on Rosewood, Larch and Greenoaks where we made forts out of the rubble. We also heard the rumors of a large, ornate swimming pool dismantled in favor of new homes on Juniper Drive. And I frequently rode my bike past an old, spooky house near the Linden Avenue gates which I later learned was the Flood Estate Gate House.

There were other clues of a past gone by: massive urns, granite benches and old streetlamps surrounded by lush shrubbery and over-arching trees where we played ‘hide and go’ seek. We didn’t know any better —this was just our neighborhood.

It was a simpler time in the 50s and 60s. Kids had more freedom. On the weekends, we finished our chores, jumped on our bikes and didn’t come home until dark. No one worried about time or where you had to be or whether you were safe. It was always the ‘afternoon’ in Lindenwood, we could be anywhere and everywhere having fun in the safety of our private sanctuary. I had a bunch of friends up on Greenoaks, Rosewood, Lupin, Mosswood and Wisteria.

Since I wasn’t allowed to eat snacks before dinner, my rides around Lindenwood included stops at fruit trees and bushes along the way where I could eat plums, apricots, guavas and pomegranates from neighborhood yards without giving it a second thought.

I had two paper routes in Lindenwood delivering the Palo Alto Times. Every day, papers would be dropped at my home with a big bag of rubber bands. I would fold each paper, stuff them in huge canvas shoulder bags, struggle to gain balance on my bike and head up to Fredrick Avenue where the route began. Shortly thereafter, I was given a route closer to home on Hawthorne which cut the delivery time down to a few hours. In some cases, however, my route took several hours given my OCD. Every time I rode over a crack I would have to circle back and avoid the crack to ensure that nothing ‘bad’ would happen to my brother who was stationed in Vietnam.

The streets of Lindenwood were the perfect playground for having fun, some were harmless like playing football on the Heather Drive ‘big lawn’ and some were not always the safest. BB-gun wars in and out of trees, bushes and yards. One time we ‘wheeled’ a twin-engine go-kart to the James Avenue gate. Kids were positioned at all the feeder streets — Heather, Hawthorne, Magnolia, Catalpa, Greenoaks — to stop traffic from entering James. We started the engines then raced all the way up James Avenue ending at the owners’ home on Irving Avenue. Thrilling times and fun that still brings a smile to my face.

Lindenwood was home to several noteworthy people during my time growing up there. John Brodie, former Stanford football star and 49ers quarterback lived across the street. Y.A. Tittle, also a legendary 49er quarterback lived with his family on Rosewood Drive. And, Lindsey Buckingham lived on Flood Circle. I swam and played water-polo with Lindsey at Menlo-Atherton (he also gave me my first and only guitar lesson after practice one day). Lindsey’s older brother Greg won silver medal in the 200-meter individual medley at the 1968 Tokyo Olympics. Many of you may know Lindsey Buckingham as the massively talented guitar player, formerly a member of the rock band Fleetwood Mac.

So that’s my story — great memories of growing up in Lindenwood, the former James Clair Flood Estate in Atherton.

It was a great time to be a kid. Although I didn’t live in Lindenwood, I did live on Arbor rd between Valparaiso and Santa Cruz.

I have exactly the same memories.

I grew up on Politzer Dr in Menlo. The time was so wonderful. We rode bikes all over Menlo, Atherton, Stanford and Palo Alto. There was never a time when we were afraid. The whole area was safe..no crime as I remember. Before my parents divorced, my Dad painted a kick ball field in the street on Politzer in front of our house. He used white spray paint for the bases and home. All the kids in the neighborhood and some parents played with us almost every late afternoon and evening in the spring and summer. The police came one afternoon and told my Dad not to paint anymore in the street. It was so much fun and everyone had a great time. I wonder how many of us are still alive and remember the kick ball games. Growing up in Menlo in the late 50’s and 60’s was absolute NIRVANA!!!

Thank you, Chris. Your sister Joni and I are same age, but I lived on the other side of El Camino on Mercedes Lane, in the Hillview School District. Life was very much as you and your readers have described! Oh the memories. I don’t think I knew a soul from Lindenwood until I got to M-A.

Our dads were colleagues, both in the one-stop shop Family Practice (sadly missing in present day medical practice!) at 1230 Hopkins in Redwood City. Your dad, Mason, was my brother’s and my pediatrician. I recall being quite little when *Dr. Abramson* made a house call. (I think my dad, the general surgeon, made an occasional housecall himself. I also recall dad pulling the bicycle handlebar -with no hand grip-cover on it- out of neighbor, Tommy Bradshaw’s belly on the ground on our cul de sac one evening.
Back to housecalls: Daddy set my larger bedroom up like a hospital room for my kid brother and me. I had to have been about 5 and kid brother about 3. A house call meant:
A. We were seriously ill and Daddy preferred to consult with your dad,
And/or B. We needed shots for whatever ailed us. I can still smell your dad’s pipe smoke.

Cheers!

…wow, what a story. I went on several house calls with him!! And, coming from a mixed family of 8, we lined up in our living room for vaccinations of all sorts…fun times…

Great story. I lived at the end of Oak Grove. I remember you and your family. I think my husband Jeff replied earlier as Jeff Marinn
We all had a great childhood and life in that area. Kids on bicycles and yes some other crazy antics.

Hi my darling neighbor boy! Do you remember running around the “track” in our backyard and my dad would pay you 5 $’s a sprint? He use to love to watch you run. We lived there from 1954 til 1961. I remember your family fondly and was so glad to see this article. Deedee Davis Kank sent it to me.

KATIE!!! So good to hear from you. I tried to connect with you about 6 months ago to catch up on what you’re doing, Lindenwood and your brother John…still my favorite 49er quarterback. I remember your dad walked daily in Atherton and Menlo Park and read a little about his innovative insurance work with the Kaiser organization. I volunteer with the Atherton Historical Association and started an archive file on John…hope to fill it with some great memorabilia on his storied career. Be great to talk sometime…take care, Chris.

Aloha to dear friends from Menlo Park. I loved growing up there. Lived on the corner across the street from Los Lomitas elementary school and graduated 1959 from MA. I loved riding my bike everywhere, especially on fraternity row at Stanford. Went off to Oregon to nursing school and never went back to Menlo Park. Today I am a retired RN but still run a little Bed and Breakfast inn in Calistoga called Trailside Inn. I hung out with Melinda Moore and Lynne Holleufer and had a crush on John King. Where did all that time go? Great memories!

I remember you and I went out on a date. Where have the years gone. They were great times. We moved to Henderson,NV in 1992 and still live there. Our daughter has a big home on Atherton Ave that they are renting out for ungodly numbers as the live in Carmel and have two sons 14 and 16. We go ther a lot. I am going to try to come to the reunion this year but can’t say for sure yet. All is well here and we’re doing great just getting older. Ted Gruner. I lived across from the Lindenwood gates on Lane Place

I grew up in the third house built in Ladera. I would walk miles to be with my fiends.
We would hunt and fish together in a wide open country.

Bill Brodie attended M-A when I first attended M-A in the mid 50’s. When I eventually started working at Varian in Palo Alto I would often see John Brodie driving his big, white Cadillac convertible driving through Los Altos on my way home…

…great memories Mickey. Jerry is no longer with us but growing up, his search for adventure and thrills was very strong. He once built a simple radio station that was quickly shut down by the FCC; pretty amazing guy, going onto art school and teaching at NYU…thanks for the mention…

Chris, What wonderful memories. I lived on Rosewood drive starting on 1949. The barn was still a barn and we played in it often. Played in the empty pool at Flood Circle. There were no houses between our house and Marsh road. I have a photograph of my sister in our back yard with nothing but field behind her. Y.A. moved in across the street. Do you remember Pat, the mailman ? He knew everyone. Rode my bike to Encinal school. Steve Horton, included above, was a classmate. Thank you for the memories. Barry

Thanks Barrett, I volunteer with the Atherton Historical Association, focusing on Lindenwood. Your memories of the Flood Estate are terrific. The estate pool was gone by the time I was old enough to roam the streets but the mansion debris was still around. And the subdivision maps clearly show NO home development north of James avenue to Marsh road. I do remember the mailman, real personable guy. And, I frequently went on the milkman’s route around our streets standing up front in the truck helping with deliveries. Saturday mornings after chores, I rode my bike to Fosters Freeze (Oak Grove near ECR) and swept the parking lot for a nickel and a free ice cream cone!! Great memories…

Hi Chris. Gerry Beckers here. I lived at 52 James beginning in 1956 and graduated with your brother Jerry in 1959. I am sure you’d have been at our house and I remember being at yours quite a bit. Your brother introduced me to some things I won’t mention but one that stands out is the love of reading. He was a big science fiction buff.

Lindenwood was/is all that others have described. It was a reasonable walk to MAHS but when your brother got what I remember as an Oldsmobile in our senior year, I hitched a ride on a lot of occasions and he would hit me up for a buck now and then which put almost 5 gallons in the tank!

My folks lived there until 1975 when my Dad passed. I mostly left in 1966 after college and complying with a letter from then President Johnson about something called the draft. My visits to the Menlo Park area in recent years have been to visit my younger sister in Belmont and Stanford Medical for World Class treatment. I do manage a drive down James from time to time and smile at the memories.

Hi Gerry, (I think of your name pronunciation as ‘Gary’). I was over at your house ‘a ton’, playing with your brother Peter. Memories: running over to listen to KOBY, the 1st ‘top 40’ AM radio channel playing rock ‘n roll, listening to Frank Sinatra’s soundtrack for the movie ‘Pal Joey’ near your outdoor fireplace and playing with Peter’s toy cars. I also remember swimming at the Hawkins home (an Eichler) next door to you and playing ‘army’ in the Mino’s backyard on the other side of you. Jerry did have that old Oldsmobile – think I have a photo of it somewhere. Thanks for bringing back these great memories…Chris.
