See Me, See My Community: A Visual Storytelling Workshop set for April 20

by Contributed Content on April 17, 2024

This special event for teens and adults features author Ajuan Mance who is also the artist behind the illustrated books What Do Brothas Do All Day, Living While Black, and 1001 Black Men.

On Saturday, April 20 from 3:00 to 4:30 pm, join her at the Menlo Park Library (800 Alma St.) to explore the ways we can use art to share the unique ways that we see ourselves and the communities of which we are a part.

Our communities are as varied as we are, and most of us see ourselves as part of a number of different communities. There are neighborhoods. There are racial, religious, and gender-based communities. There are communities based on whom you love, but also on what you do for employment, the kind of music you like, the school you attended, your nation of origin, and your military status, just to name a few.

For this workshop, you’ll be creating a visual story based on one of the communities of which you are a part.

You don’t need to be an artist to participate, and all skill levels are welcome as we do a short project based on Ajuan’s own uses of art to record and share the way she experiences her own community and the people who are a part of it.

This event is a part of Peninsula Libraries Comic Arts Fest (PLCAF), an annual collaboration between Menlo Park and other city and county libraries throughout San Mateo County.

This free event received funding support from the Friends of the Menlo Park Library.
