What’s the story behind the new tiles at Oak Knoll School?

by Linda Hubbard on June 26, 2024

Oak Knoll principal Alicia Payton-Miyazaki gave us a heads up about the new handmade tiles located just outside her office:

“This project was coordinated between one of our parents, Tatiana Maratchi Legrain, and our art teacher Jayd Almquist. Tatiana led a team of 5th grade parent volunteers to source and install this project while Mr. Almquist worked with our students to create their unique tiles during art class.

“Each child was invited to create a tile that was then used to create the mosaic. Parents were instrumental in installing the work and will support our Otters in annually creating a piece of art they leave on our campus as they clap out to Hillview.”

Tatiana supplied some more details:

“Amy Moore as well as Tori Pickett and Amy Kurpuis were also instrumental in making this happen.

“We all have 5th graders, and Alicia thought the planters needed some love, so we had this idea to have the graduating Otters leave a forever imprint at Oak Knoll!

“Jayd was phenomenal as always, and the kids were so excited! We made sure to make it happen in the last weeks of school just before they graduated!

“Hopefully the tradition will continue until we cover all the planters at Oak Knoll with the names of graduating Otters!”
